The Job Specific Performance Assessment (JSPA) physical ability evaluation is designed to measure a candidate’s capacity to perform the physical tasks required of a firefighter. These tasks include:

  • Tool carry

  • Ladder raise

  • Ladder extension

  • Hose drag

  • Stair climb

  • Horizontal stand pipe hoist

  • Dummy drag

Candidates are required to complete the aerial ladder climb which consists of climbing the 107-foot aerial ladder to the top, receiving acknowledgement of the climb from a firefighter on the ground, and descending the aerial ladder. The ladder will be placed at a 70-degree climbing angle. Candidates shall have safety devices attached to them during the climb. The ladder climb does not have a time requirement. Candidates must successfully complete the ladder climb prior to the JSPA.
