The Job Specific Performance Assessment (JSPA) physical ability evaluation is designed to measure a candidate’s capacity to perform the physical tasks required of a firefighter. These tasks include:

  • Tool carry

  • Ladder raise

  • Ladder extension

  • Hose drag

  • Stair climb

  • Horizontal stand pipe hoist

  • Dummy drag

The video below provides a review of each individual task, as well as a demonstration of the assessment in its entirety.

Firefighters are also asked to complete a 70-degree ladder climb as part of the JSPA evaluation. In the video below, Fire Engineer Dan Pechnyo instructs the proper technique for climbing the City fire truck's 107-foot ladder.
