Yes. For several reasons:

  • For your personal safety and that of your family and guests.
  • To protect future purchasers who deserve reasonable assurance that the home they will buy will be safe.
  • To ensure the economic well-being of the community by reducing potential spread of fire and disease.

Obtaining a building permit alone will not assure the work has been done correctly.  Inspection of the work is the most important part of the process.  Having the work inspected will provide you with the assurance that the work has been properly completed. This will also provide a permanent record of compliance with building code requirements.

Building permits provide the means for city building inspectors to inspect construction projects to ensure that minimum standards are met and appropriate materials are used. Inspection is the only way to independently verify that you comply with the adopted building codes. As a homeowner, you have a substantial investment that can be seriously jeopardized through less-than-complete code compliance. For insurance reasons, resale, refinancing and peace of mind, obtaining a permit is the right decision.

    Purchasing Materials (Tax Free)
