Become a WFD Firefighter

Firefighters perform skilled work in fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical care. This position plays a vital role in protecting life and property and operates under the supervision of a company officer. The firefighter role is a commissioned, safety-sensitive position.

Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- 18 years of age
- Driver License and safe driving record
- Ability to legally work in the United States
Desirable Qualifications
- EMT-B or Paramedic Certification
Below are key dates to help you begin planning for the hiring process. As you advance through each stage, you will receive additional details about scheduling options and locations. Medical and drug screenings are conducted by third-party providers and are subject to their availability, so scheduled dates may be approximate.
All process dates are subject to change and candidates will be given adequate notice to changes if they occur. All below dates are in the year 2025.
Application Dates
Monday, July 14 to Monday, August 4.
Written Test
The written test will be offered on the below dates and times:
- Tuesday, August 19. 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
- Wednesday, August 20. 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
- Thursday, August 21. 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Video Interview
Video interviews will be held Monday, August 25 through Friday, August 29.
JSPA
The JSPA, our physical fitness assessment, will be offered on the below dates:
- Saturday, September 6
- Saturday, September 13
In-Person Interviews
In-person interviews will be held Monday, September 15 through Friday, September 19.
Out-Of-State Candidate Considerations
Out-of-state candidates will be scheduled as indicated below. Advancing through each section is dependent upon achieving a passing score on the previous sections. Additional testing may not have adjustments for out-of-state candidates, however, those candidates will try to be accommodated.
- Video Interviews: same dates as above
- Written Test: Thursday, September 11. 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
- JSPA Test: Saturday, September 13
- In-Person Interview: Monday, September 15
Job Offers
After the in-person interviews are scored, the top candidates will move forward to:
- Background Investigation (September 22 to October 10)
- Medical Examination (October 6 to October 31)
- Psychological Evaluation (October 6 to October 31)
- Additional Medical Screening (TBD)
After successful completion of all phases, final job offers will be tendered to the top-qualifying applicants. This is anticipated to take place between October 15 and November 7, 2025. These dates may be adjusted as the process progresses.

Candidates who successfully pass the application review process will be invited to move forward to the written test.
Note: Westminster Fire no longer uses COFIRE or any other external fire testing centers.
Candidates will complete a written examination to evaluate general skills including reading comprehension, math, and writing.
Candidates who successfully pass the application review process will be invited to move forward to the written test.
Candidates will be recorded while answering a set of questions. These interviews will subsequently be scored by a panel.
Candidates will complete the Job Specific Performance Assessment (JSPA) which is a standardized physical ability test. The JSPA evaluates your ability to perform key physical tasks required of a firefighter on the job. The test is pass/fail. There is no independent score or ranking. Scores from this section are not averaged into the final score in the hiring process.

Candidates that have a certificate of passing from the 2025 Firefighter Fitness Program do not need to take this portion of the test.
Please note: Westminster Fire does not accept a CPAT certification in place of the JSPA.
The top candidates from the video interview, and who have successfully passed the JSPA, will move to an in-person interview with a fire department panel.
Top candidates from each portion of the testing process will move to the next section(s). The final scoring is based on the in-person interviews. The Fire Chief has the discretion to add an interview with the executive team as the final step in the process.
The top candidates from the interviews will complete a background packet and will undergo a thorough background investigation.
The top candidates from the interviews will be scheduled for a medical examination and a psychological test.
Candidates passing all portions of testing will be subject to a pre-employment drug screening.
Top-qualifying candidates may undergo an additional medical screening focused on cardiac-related issues.
Candidates who successfully complete the testing process and receive a final job offer will be hired prior to the start of the fire academy in January 2026.
New hires must successfully complete the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course at the North Area Fire Academy (NAFA) in order to maintain employment.
Candidates who already hold a current EMT certification (Colorado or National Registry) will still be required to complete the North Area EMT course.
Candidates who possess a current Paramedic certification may still be required to complete the North Area EMT course.
JOB SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT (JSPA)
The Job Specific Performance Assessment (JSPA) physical ability evaluation is designed to measure a candidate's capacity to perform the physical tasks required of a firefighter. These tasks include:
- Tool carry
- Ladder raise
- Ladder extension
- Hose drag
- Stair climb
- Horizontal stand pipe hoist
- Dummy drag
Candidates are required to complete the aerial ladder climb which consists of climbing the 107-foot aerial ladder to the top, receiving acknowledgment of the climb from a firefighter on the ground, and descending the aerial ladder. The ladder will be placed at a 70-degree climbing angle. Candidates shall have safety devices attached to them during the climb. The ladder climb does not have a time requirement. Candidates must successfully complete the ladder climb prior to the JSPA.
