Emergency Management
Emergency Notification Systems
Westminster residents are encouraged to stay prepared and informed. Receiving the right information at the right time can make all the difference in an emergency. The City utilizes two different emergency notification systems for residents, LookoutAlert and Genasys. Residents are encouraged to register for both systems which will keep you informed and ready to act.
Westminster’s LookoutAlert notification system keeps residents informed about critical situations, from wildfires and severe weather to evacuations, and other urgent public safety concerns. Landline numbers are already registered in the system, but cell phone users must opt-in to receive alerts. By registering your phone number and linking it to your address, you ensure you’ll receive notifications based on your location, whether home or work. You can customize which notifications you receive including calls, text messages, and/or emails.
All City of Westminster residents, whether living in Adams or Jefferson County, are encouraged to register. If your information was previously in the CodeRed system, it should be transferred, but we recommend logging in to verify your details.
Sign up for LookoutAlert. If you do not have internet access or need assistance, please contact the Westminster Communications Center at 303-658-4360.
In partnership with Lookout Alert, Westminster has introduced Genasys Protect, a tool for tracking designated evacuation zones. Knowing your zone in advance allows for faster, safer responses if an evacuation is necessary. Genasys helps residents quickly locate their evacuation zone based on their address, making it easy to follow evacuation instructions during emergencies.
Visit the Genasys Protect website to find your designated zone. You can also download the Genasys app for easy access to your evacuation zone and receive location-specific notifications directly on your mobile device. Available on both iOS and Android, the Genasys app allows you to monitor your zone in real time and stay updated on any emergency notifications, so you’re prepared wherever you are. This information, paired with real-time notifications from LookoutAlert, ensures you’re ready to act if needed.
Emergency Preparedness
Preparedness is a shared responsibility between the City, our residents, our business community, and our service and faith-based organizations. The City's emergency management plans for extreme cold and heat include operating shelters. Community preparedness and resilience depends on everyone doing their part to be aware of potential hazards and being prepared to quickly implement a shelter-in-place or evacuation plan. Being aware, building a kit, and having a plan can help you, your family and our community be ready to respond to and recovery from any emergency.
-
Cooling Shelters
When "Major" or "Extreme" heat risk advisories are issued by the National Weather Service - Boulder, the City will notify the community that recreation centers and libraries are available options for residents to keep cool and safe during normal business hours.
-
Emergency Cold Weather Shelter
In addition to Denver, Jefferson, and Adams Counties’ respective cold weather sheltering services, the City of Westminster provides supplemental emergency sheltering in extreme cold weather conditions for residents who may be experiencing an emergency loss of heat or lack appropriate shelter.
