Earlier today, the City shared the following message with Westminster’s federal representatives:
Like many of you, we have watched in horror and disbelief at the escalation of violence and deadly force used by ICE agents in Minneapolis and in other parts of our country.
We support the bipartisan call for a thorough and fair investigation of the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good – two American citizens with Colorado ties – and anyone wrongly targeted by ICE because of their race or beliefs. We demand justice and full accountability for those who break the law.
We stand with the impacted communities in Minnesota and across the country, including here close to home. No person should have to be afraid to go to work. No child should be scared to go to school. No parent should have to decide whether or not to open their front door for their baby. And never should a person fear for their life for standing up for what they believe to be just, peacefully, as is their right as an American citizen.
As Westminster City Councillors, it is our sworn duty to uphold the Constitution. We condemn the
flagrant disregard of constitutional rights, including due process, free speech, and unlawful search and seizure.
Let us be clear on where we stand: The City of Westminster will not waver on our core values. ICE has detained people, including children, simply because of the color of their skin or their accent. We will continue to protect and advocate for all community members.
We are grateful for the professionalism demonstrated by our local law enforcement officers who continue to lead with dignity and respect in our community as they protect both civil rights and public safety. We believe the Westminster Police Department is best suited to enforce laws, rules, and regulations within the City of Westminster. Our law enforcement officers have worked tirelessly to prepare to protect and serve any resident or guest within the boundaries of the City of Westminster, and we have absolute faith in their ability to do so.
The fear and violence in communities across our country must end. We stand for human rights and those peacefully protesting in impacted communities.
Therefore, as Westminster City Councillors, we call on our federal delegation to support specific demands for action and reform that are currently being proposed in Congress to restructure the Department of Homeland Security to include additional accountability and enhanced public safety measures.
