ADAPTIVE reuSE OF sHERIDAN gREEN ELEMENTARY fACILITY

Update August 25, 2023:

The online feedback form closed Tuesday, September 12, 2023. Community feedback will be presented to the City Council on September 25, 2023.

Update August 1, 2023:  A second community meeting about the adaptive reuse of Sheridan Green Elementary is scheduled for Thursday, August 24, from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Upon learning of JeffCo Public Schools’ (JPS) decision to close Sheridan Green earlier this year, Westminster has been working closely with JPS to ensure a smooth transition of ownership, and we appreciate your continued engagement with us.

At the upcoming meeting, we will provide an overview of the community feedback that we have received and present some potential concepts for discussion based on community input.

  • Concept 1: City retains the property and utilizes it for community programming including but not limited to recreation, children’s summer camps, and library options.
  • Concept 2: The Rocky Mountain Presbyterian Church (RMPC) has expressed interest in purchasing the property as a new home for their congregation, as well as providing community programming including an afterschool program.
  • Concept 3: A hybrid of options 1 and 2 where the City sells the property to RMPC or another entity, and the City leases a portion of the property to provide recreation and library programming.

While we are in the early concept phase of repurposing Sheridan Green Elementary and are still seeking solicitations from organizations, RMPC leadership has been invited to present their proposal to ensure the community has the latest information.

We are committed to being transparent with the community in this process. Please share this information with your Sheridan Green neighbors.

Meeting Information:

Date and Time: Thursday, August 24 from 6 – 7:30 p.m.
Location: Sheridan Green Elementary (10951 Harlan St.)

Update July 12, 2023: The City has been synthesizing the community’s feedback submitted through the online web form which will continue to be available until August 1, 2023.

The next public event will be tentatively scheduled for late August 2023. The City will share an invitation once a date, time, and location have been finalized with JeffCo Public Schools, the facility’s current owner. The intention for this next meeting is to discuss the community input received and present options based on this input, along with the relative to cost, resources, timing, and probability of success associated with each option.

While there was not a consensus, there appears to be strong support for community uses such as a community center, recreation center, learning center, library, children’s recreation center, church, affordable preschool, daycare, after school care, hub for homeschooled children, summer camps, and senior center.

The community expressed interest in programming including maker spaces, culinary arts classes, writing classes, music classes, use of the building as a performance venue, art hub, enrichment classes, fitness and yoga classes, provision of community meeting spaces, gardening, and Boys and Girls Club location.

Residents are interested in upgrading the outdoor space including fixing the tennis courts, constructing a picnic shelter, providing indoor and/or outdoor pickleball courts, a community pool, dog park, and a community garden.

There was some support for additional single-family homes although there were also residents opposed to any residential use. There was also support for and opposition to providing affordable senior housing and attainable/workforce housing.

In addition, there was some support for private uses such as the provision of a grocery store, food hall, or family-friendly brewery. There was overwhelmingly negative feedback to reusing the site as a homeless shelter, though a small minority supported this use.
